MediaWink Cell
Phone Tutorial
The first step in putting any list on a cell phone is to install the
MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial to ensure that other lists or books will
work on your cell
phone. The steps involved are:
- Make sure your phone has Java support or the
tutorial and other MediaWink products will not work.
- Install
the Tutorial onto your phone either via Cable, or "Over the Air".
The Installation
Guide page may help for cable installs.
- If your phone doesn't handle large products,
try
installing the "Small" MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial. If that
works, then you will
need to install the "small" list or book, if there is one, or contact
MediaWink customer service to see what other options are
available. The smaller lists and books are the same as the
standard lists, except that they are broken into more smaller
applications so they can work on phones that aren't able to handle the
larger ones.
Check for Java Support
In order for any of the lists to work, your phone will need to support
Java. Specifically, J2ME (Java 2 Micro-Edition), version
1.1. To find out if it is supported, you have two options:
- Contact the maker of your phone, by going to
their
home-page, or by giving them a call. Alternatively, you can
read
the owners manual of your phone to find out.
- Try installing the MediaWink Cell Phone
Tutorial, and if your phone
doesn't support Java (J2ME 1.1), the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial
won't work. If
the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial does
work, then you know your phone supports Java. If it does not
work, then you know that the products available at MediaWink will not
work on your phone, either because your phone does not support this
version of Java, or for some other reason.
NOTE to Verizon
customers: Unfortunately, as of this writing, Verizon has
chosen to remove
Java support
from all their cell phones. Unless this changes, you will not
be
able to use any of these cell phone products if you have Verizon as
your cell phone service provider. If this is the case, please
do
the following:
1. Please contact MediaWink
so we know that there is interest. You can send a message
that
simply says "Verizon User," or you can add additional information if
you'd like.
2. Please email
Verizon Wireless support,
so they know there is interest. Hopefully with enough people
emailing Verizon, they will start supporting Java on their cell
phones. On the Email Verizon web page, you will probably want
to
select "Feedback" as the topic, and "Product or Service Feedback" as
the sub-topic. Your comment to Verizon may look something
like
the following, though please use your own words to make it more
personal. You may want to add your name, how long
you have
been with Verizon, etc:
I
am a Verizon customer, and was saddened to hear that Verizon disables
Java support on their phones. What can I do to run Java
applications on my Verizon cell phone? If Verizon is planning
on
not crippling their cell phones by removing Java support in the future,
when can I expect to see this improvement? Thank you for your
help.
Installing the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial
The MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial has a few sections called Big, Big2,
Big3, etc., which
contain random words to see if your phone can handle big
products. If you find that your cell phone doesn't handle the
size of the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial, try installing the "Small
Tutorial." If
the
Small Tutorial works, then you will need to purchase
"smaller”
lists and/or books. Small lists are the same as the standard
lists, but are divided into smaller Java applications, so you can open
just part of the product at a time. These smaller products
are
made for cell phones that are not able to open a large one.
There are two ways to install any product, including the MediaWink Cell
Phone Tutorial:
- Via Cable [Requires cable]
- "Over the Air" (OTA) [Requires cell phone web
access]
Installing via Cable
To install via cable, you will need to:
- Obtain the software needed to install the list
onto
the cell phone. You will need to obtain this from the maker
of
the cell phone, or elsewhere on the web.
- After obtaining the software, purchase a cable
that
works with your cell phone, if you do not already have one.
Generally this will be a USB cable that connects to your computer, and
the other end will connect to your cell phone. This may be a
mini-USB on the end that goes to your cell phone--it depends on your
phone.
To obtain the software needed to install the list on the cell phone,
you can either download the software from the maker of your cell phone,
or possibly get the software from download.com.
After obtaining the software, you will need a cable to connect your
phone to your PC.
- Find out what type of cable you need--either
from the maker of your cell phone's web page, or from your owner's
manual.
- Purchase the cable, either at a store, like
Best Buy, Circuit City, or Radio Shack, or purchase it on-line
The Installation
Guide shows how this is done on some phones.
When you have the installation software and the cable, go to the Cell
Phone Applications, Lists and Books Page
and download the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial to your PC.
Then
follow
the installation software's instructions for installing the JAR and JAD
files to your cell phone.
When you have finished installing the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial,
you can jump to the
section entitled Using the
MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial.
Installing Over the Air
To install Over the Air, you do not need a cable, but you do need cell
phone web access. This is generally available only by
subscription to wireless cell phone web access.
Using
the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial
Note: The
screen shots shown here are just samples of what the product may look
like on one type of cell phone. Due to the many different
types
of cell phones, what you see may vary some from what is displayed in
the screen shots.
Starting the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial
After copying the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial or other product to
your cell phone, you
will need to go to the area where Java applications reside on your cell
phone. This varies from phone to phone, but is typically in a
section called something like "Games and Applications." From
there, select "MediaWink Tutorial."
The Table of Contents
All cell phone lists/books start at the table of contents.
The
table of contents, or index, lists all the sections, or chapters,
contained in the list or book. From the table of content, you
can
select which section you would like to view. When you are
done
viewing a section, you can return to the table of content to view
another section.
Depending on the type of phone you have, your display may look
something like either of these two displays, with slight variations:

Chapters/Sections
The chapters, or sections, contain the different sections of the lists
or books. In the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial, the sections
are entitled:
- INTRODUCTION
- SEARCHING FOR TEXT
- PRACTICE SEARCHING
- PLACING CALLS AND VISITING WEBSITES
- WHEN YOU ARE DONE
- ABOUT BIG
- BIG
- BIG2
- ...
- BIG6
The "BIG" sections are just sections containing a lot of random text to
make sure your phone can handle these large sections. If your
phone does not, try "MediaWink Small Tutorial," which is identical
except that it doesn't have the "BIG" sections. If that
works,
but the normal (big) one doesn't, then you will need to download and
purchase the smaller lists/books.
Introduction
Each list or book has an introduction. The introduction may
be blank for some products.
Searching for Text
The Searching for text section of the MediaWink Cell
Phone Tutorial tells
how to search for text within a section.
Practice Searching
The Practice searching section is a section where you can practice
searching for text.
Placing Calls and Visiting Websites
The Placing Calls and Visiting Websites section shows how you can call
phone numbers that are in a list or book, or visit URL's of
websites that are included in a product (provided you subscribe to
wireless internet access, of course).
When you are done
When you are done with the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial, you can
purchase and install an
actual product that you want on your cell phone, through the same
process as the MediaWink Cell Phone Tutorial.
About BIG
The About BIG section tells about the "BIG" sections--that they are
large sections with random text, to make sure that your cell phone can
handle large lists.
The "BIG" sections
The big sections themselves are just random pieces of text.
See About BIG for more information.
